How do we define it?
In defining spyware, we use the definition that was created by the Anti-Spyware Coalition, where Safer-Networking Ltd. was a member and part of the working group for creating these definitions. It is there described as:
Underlying Technology
Tracking software – used to monitor user behavior or gather information about the user, sometimes including personally identifiable or other sensitive information.
Why the Underlying Technology May Be Wanted
- Done covertly, tracking is spying
- May cause personal information to be shared widely or allow it to be stolen, resulting in fraud or ID theft.
- Can slow machine down
- May be associated with security risks
